Develop a Pattern With Your Fishing Techniques for Bass - Recreation

Author: Warren Wong

It is not enough to know how bass behave and what they eat and to have all the right equipment when you are bass fishing. One of the fishing techniques you need to develop is knowledge of the water. The top layer of water is the first layer that becomes accessible in spring. When fishing bass in this season you have to use the proper lures, such as top floating lures that have darting and splashing action that will attract the fish.

The middle section of water separates the top from the bottom and acts as the barrier between the temperatures in both sections of water. Bass usually spend most of their time in this area as the transitional area of temperature and it is here you will find some of the best bass fishing. The lure you use here will be different from that of the top, with the best being action and rattle baits and medium diving plugs.

Even though the bottom area of the water has the coldest temperature, this cold water does sometimes rotate to the top and vice versa. Therefore, at certain times of the year, you will be able to fish for bass in deeper waters. They also drop down to this layer when they are in their inactive period or when something frightens them. The best lures to use in deep water are worm and flipping jigs and crankbaits for deep water.

You don't have to be out in the middle of a lake in a boat to be able to fish for bass. You can use the same techniques when fishing for smallmouth bass from shore. This is because they are found only about the length of your cast from the shoreline. However, you have to look at the shoreline. If you decide to cast off from a clear area, it is very unlikely you will be successful. The best areas along the shore to choose for fishing bass are those where there are lots of weeds and other vegetation. Bass sometimes hide in these areas.

Early morning and evenings are the best times of the day to fish for bass from the shore. This is because the low light gives the bass more confidence, which in reality makes it more vulnerable to anglers.

Learning to watch the weather is another technique that experienced bass anglers have mastered. You will rarely see any of them casting out their lines on the day after a cold front has passed through. This is because the instincts of the bass alert it to changes in the weather, such as colder weather and they will feed frenzily until they are full. Then they become inactive for a day. The following day they start feeding again, which would be the best time to have a day of fishing. However, just because they are inactive won't mean they won't bite at the lure. They just won't expend the energy needed to chase it down.

You do have to know the type of bass that inhabits the river or lake where you are fishing. This knowledge will assist you in choosing the proper lure for that fish.

Go with what you’re comfortable with, and what you feel confident in. If you feel like there’s something you’re missing that a baitcaster would help you attain, then buy one. If you’re having fun and catching fish, then why spend the dough?

does anybody know of a good tackle box for me?
i can never find the right tackle box for all my fishing lures
i need something that is not to big or to small
something that will hold bobers, worms, jigs, crankbaits, everything
and it has to be $20-$30 and have a strap

What are the type of rods that I should use for certain lures?
For crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, texas rig, carolina rig, spooks and so on.
Please list the rod action and length best for types of lure.

Crankbaits – 7′ medium action, rated for 8 to 14 pound line, 10lb fluorocarbon.

Jigs – 6’6 medium heavy action, rated 12 to 20 pound line, 17lb mono.

Spinnerbaits – 7′ medium heavy action rod, rated 10 to 20 pound line, 17lb mono.

Texas rigs – 6’6 medium action rod, rated 8 to 14 pound line, 12lb mono.

Carolina rigs – 6’6 medium action rod, rated 8 to 12 pound line, 10lb fluorocarbon.

Poppers/cigar baits – 6′ medium action rod, rated 8 to 15 pound line, 10lb mono.

Lilly pad frog fishin’ – 7′ heavy action rod, rated 15 to 30 pound line, 30lb braid.

Flippin’ & Pitchin’ – 7’6 heavy action rod, rated 15 to 30 pound line, 30lb braid, or 20lb mono.

BIG swimbaits – 7’6 extra-heavy action rod, rated 20 to 40 pound line, 40lb braid or 30lb mono.

Wacky rigs – 7′ medium light action rod, rated 6 to 10 pound line, 6lb fluorocarbon.

Finesse wormin’ – 7′ medium action rod, rated 6 to 12 pound line, 8lb fluorocarbon.

    Anybody make their own lures?
I’ve always been interested in this but have never tried doing it myself. I’d love to make my own jigs, crankbaits, and maybe a spinnerbait or 2. It’s hard to find certain baits in certain colors that I need at times, which is a big let down before a weekend on the lake. How hard is it to do this? What can I expect to spend for say, making a few 1/4 ounce jigs, a couple of crankbaits, and a couple of spinnerbaits? Also who sells the materials needed for this?
Thanks Nathan. That’s exactly what I was looking for.

To start off plenty of hooks and weights of different sizes are important to have due to changing conditions and what not. You seem to have a broad enough selection to catch fish in most conditions. But with that said, do you have different sizes? Colors? Styles? Sizes, color, and variations of different baits are very important to have at all times. For example, a red 1/4 ounce crankbait may work this morning but by noon it may not get a single hit. Maybe fish moved to deeper water and need something a bit bigger and a little lighter in color. There’s all kinds of scenarios to factor in. So again, having different colors, sizes, variations, and deep/shallow diving baits is a must. This applys to any bait be it plastics, spinnerbaits, jigs, etc. I would take each bait that you listed and go out and get the variations of them the best you can. Other than that:

rain gear is always nice to have handy. It’s no fun getting stuck in a t shirt and jeans when a down pour happens to come.

Scents are always good to have. If fish are tedning to be picky your scents can make a nice difference.

Trailers for your jigs. Always fish a jig with some type of trailer. I like chunk trailers best.

More top waters wouldn’t hurt. Poppers, Jitterbugs, and Rogues are all great choices.

Small jigheads for your Panfish setups. If you like Crappie fishing small floaters and Crappie jigs are a must.
