    weeds and crankbaits?
I don’t normally use crankbaits but decided it would help if i started using more of them more often. Plus i always buy them but never end up using them…anyway today i was fishing a rapala dt-4 on a pond by my house but on most casts i would come up with algae, weeds, and other crap on the treble hooks. I was wondering how i could avoid this. I know the keeping the rod tip higher will keep the bait higher but are there any other options. because i plan on starting to use them more ofter on lakes if i can just keep stuff off the treble hooks.

What pound line are you using?
If you are using a DT4 on 8# line it will run deeper than 4ft.
One thing you can do is go to a heavier line, say if you are using 12#(which would be ideal for DT baits) switch it 14 or 15# line.
Smaller dia. line has less resistance and will allow a crank bait to run deeper than it will on heavier line that has more resistance and does not allow the crank bait to run as deep.

At times when I know fish are hitting crank baits I may have 3 or 4 rods on the deck of my boat all with the exact same bait on.
With each rod/reel combo having a different weight line on it.
This will give me a wide variety of depths I can cover without changing baits.

Another thing you can do is what is known as a stop and go retrieve. To do this you make your cast and give the reel a couple of cranks to get the bait down to its running depth, then pause. This will allow your bait to float up a little (depending on how long your pause is) then you start your retrieve again. This is very helpful if you know where a log, brush pile, or grass is. By pausing for a second or two your bait will rise above the obstruction.

Could go on with more details, but there have been whole books written on the use of crank baits.

Go to this link and and click on the “How to fish” Might find something that will help you fish the DT series better.

I buy my fishing supplies and lures at Cabela or Bass Pro Shops. Both stores have all the brands. If one of these stores is near you, I suggest going to it because it’s amazing inside.

ever rapala is special for different thing. if your going for bass i love the countdown in silver for in oliver green muddler. but for any other fish the shad rap in walleye baby bass and in perch do very well good luck.
p.s. idk y but with the countdowns it seems the small the the size the large the fish idk y might just be luck.

I’m trying to fish topwater and crankbaits of sort, do i have to buy a seperate rod and reel for each?
i’m really confused on how you set up a crank bait or topwater lure. Do you attach it straight onto the line or can u put a swivel on it, which allows me to just switch the bait faster????

What are good crankbaits for small, shallow ponds/reservoirs?
OK, so i have a lot of crankbaits. Both deep diving and shallow diving. The thing is, i have never caught anything on them. I dont know why, they just dont seem to work for me. What are some good crank baits i can buy for a shallow pond?

    * I fish for largemouth bass *
I use a lot of other lures like spinnerbaits, topwaters.. i just want suggestions on crankbaits nothing but crankbaits..
STOP TELLING ME ABOUT OTHER LURES! ALL I WANT TO KNOW IS ABOUT CRANK BAITS!

MANN’s baby 1 minus is the best shallow crankbait i have ever used. especially with hot chartreuse color even in water that has over 7 ft visibility.

works best over the top of grass beds or shallow cover. sometimes reeling it so slow it just barely wiggles on the surface. sometimes getting it down to it’s max diving range. sometimes a stop and go presentation. sometimes just kind of popping it like a top water popper. that works best for spooky fish. just barely twitching it so the nose dives under without making a splash and the on the pause it pops up and then back level again. you can get a lot of work this way while barely moving it toward you so it stays in the area working for a very long time.
