Old School Walleye Fishing Family Secrets
Walleye fishing tips with Artificials, Lures
When fishing for walleye the smart walleye angler understands there is a need to know how to use walleye fishing lures as well as using live bait Although like bait accounts for the majority of walleyes caught by angling, there are many times when walleye fishing artificials work better.
One of my favorite walleye fishing tips is to tell people when walleye's are not in tight schools and they are scattered, a good way to find where the walleye are at is to troll walleye fishing lures. Once you find a school and catch the aggressive fish the action slows. But yoo may be able to catch a few more by switching to live bait.
One of the best ways to find fish in unfamiliar waters when fishing for walleye is by trolling with walleye lures. Make sure you keep a keen eye when you are following structure lines. Look for points and inside turns on the breakline, areas of hard bottom and schools of fish.Make sure you have spot markers on your boat and when you get a strike or locate a potential spot toss out a marker so you can return later.
Artificial walleye lures ofton work better then live bait in fast moving or low clarity water. One of the better walleye fishing tips to remember is walleyes that are in current have very little time to inspect there food, so they tend to strike at any movement or flash. Understanding the water clarity of the waters you intend to fish is so very important. for example walleye in murky water can only see a few inches, but they can hear and feel vibrations.
Many walleye anglers prefer lures for night fishing. When you are fishing for walleye at night you need to understand that walleyes can spot the moving silhouette of a artificial lure against the water's surface much easier then say live bait moving slowly along the bottom. And artificials eliminate the problem of baiting your hook at night.
When you are fishing for walleyes and they are on a feeding binge, you can catch them more quickly with lures than with live bait.If you think about it, during the time you spend re-baiting your hooks you could of casted your walleye lure and possibly catch another walleye.
The choice is yours fishing live bait or artificials, both are good choices for certain situations. Make sure you read my articles on walleye fishing lures, the basics.

Fishing the Kenai Penninsula?
August 1st I’m off to Alaska for some fishing and sightseeing. According to the fish run charts, it looks like I’ll be arriving just in time for some silver salmon and trout runs. I was wondering if fly fishing is THE way to go or if spinning rods were just as effective? I haven’t fly fished in about 10 years, but I still have all my gear. Any particular spinning combo I should use (i.e. 7ft rod with 20 lbs test?). Any particular lures or bait that work well?
Do both and pay for a guide! They will have the equipment you need. then go out on your own after the guide trip. There are tons of small lakes loaded with trout also that fish the same as any other lake. Salmon eggs and night crawlers are the bait of choice. I love to fly fish and had a blast while going to college in Anchorage. I fished for salmon with a guide and usually fished for Kings! Had a blast and Hope you have fun too! I’m sorry I can’t suggest a guide for you I don’t have that info handy! License for fishing in Alaska is cheap! So don’t be worried about the cost of an out of state license.
It sounds like your spinning combo is just fine! That’s what I’d use with light leaders.
Steelhead fishing in Alaska question?
I have caught steelhead in the rivers around me by happen chance, using lures for salmon. But I have never targeted steelhead. Some friends swear by using eggs and different spinners.
What spin cast lures would you recommend?
And what flies or streamers would you recommend for fly rod?
Location; From Ketchikan to Juneau in South East Alaska also called the Panhandle or Inside Passage of Alaska.
Link of that area; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inside_Passage
Thanks. The one I hooked into last fall and lost has me hooked lol! What a fighter
For lures my personal bests are Hot Shots, Wiggle Warts and Lil’ Cleo Spoons (silver 3/4 oz.). There’s a whole lot more that I go with ie., Lil’ Corky’s (Luminious Flame colored) with red or salmon pink colored yarn tie above eye of hook, Spin n’ Glo, usin’ “Roe Sac” trailers (cured fresh Roe w/ Borax 100% Mule Team). Spinners be Blue Fox (lot of ppl use them for Salmon but, I find they work equally well for Steelhead). Hung a “Steelie ay’ ~ so what your sayin’ is that your close to the addiction stage;)?! My good friend it be almost IMPOSSIBLE for one not to become an addict when it comes to those “Ironheads”
! Link below will give you some good information regardin’ them, along with other links for the above mentioned, “Steelie Treats”. Good luck and “Steelhead On”

Fishing in Utah?
I live in Ogden Utah. It’s up around Salt Lake and everytime i go fishing with my dad we NEVER catch anything. We go to Pineview Reservoir. East Canyon Reservoir. Uintah lakes, Kauzee? We use worms, power bait, lures, salmon eggs, and my fly rod on the rivers and sometimes the lakes. We do early morning usually around 7, and evenings too. I have even gone to Alaska 6 times and i haven’t even caught a Salmon! It would be great if someone could really help me out. I think my dad feels like he’s letting me down because we never catch anything…
Can’t be the bait, those are all good, especially the worms.
I was going to suggest Causey, no luck there? That’s a surprise.
Try the Weber river. Go out a little earlier, about 6ish.
Use a small chunk of hot dog slathered in peanut butter.(seriously)
Good luck!!
What lure to use to pass the chinook hunt on Rapala Pro Fishing?
We’re playing the Rapala Pro fishing game on xbox and can’t seem to find or catch any salmon we’re on the Kenai River in Alaska. Where should I fish? And what lure should I use?
