Shimano makes great reels that are durable, functional and reasonably priced. Their Sahara spinning reel is a good reel for the money. With 4bb, a high speed retrieve and an anodized finish, it’s a deal at $60. If you want a little higher quality, the Stradic is a nice one for $120. One more bearing and a lil smoother reel action.
As far as line twist goes, there’s some mfg’s out there that claim they reduce twist but i haven’t seen one that actually does yet. Twist is an inherent flaw in the design of the spinning reel, because unlike a baitcaster(levelwind) you are actually twisting the line with every turn of the handle. the only way i know of to help it is a good swivel.

What brand of spinning reel is the best for bass fishing in Kentucky?
I live in Kentucky and can catch bass anywhere from 2lbs-10lbs. I like to fish with buzz, spinner baits and plastic worms. I want a nice spinning reel that can hold a significant amount of line with 10lb test. I am not wanting to pay a boatload of money. Shoot me some suggestions! Thanks!

A couple of other posts have suggested a Pfleuger reel, and I agree 100%! The Pfleuger President is by far my best spinning reel, and you would not be disappointed with it.

hey man. i will give you two great great reels that i use on a regular and they are not expensive and have never failed me. i love the abu garcia cardinal series. that one ran me about 35-40 dollars. great great reel. i have it setting on a 6′ medium action shakespear ugly stick and the other bass reel that i use is the phlugher. great one as well. i think i payed about 60 dollars for that one. i have that one sittin on an ugly stick as well. i know that both prices may seem high to some but for high quality reel the prices are not too bad. i have pulled up 20-lbs catfish with both 8-12 lb bass with both. i have even drug up a 3 foot sand shark with the abu. if you are wanting a good reel that will last you for a good long while and not give you any problems without dropping the bank there you go. good luck good fishin be safe and remember to share the experience

Does it matter if you use a spinning rod/reel compared to a baitcaster when bass fishing?
I’m new to the bass fishing world, and I’m just concerned if I need to buy a seperate type of rod/reel for bass fishing (baitcaster), for I only have experience using a spinning set-up for bluegill fishing. Any advice?

Do you plan to use all the different varieties of lures Bass fishermen have at their disposal?

A Spinning rod/reel is mostly designed specifically for “light tackle” Bass fishing using lighter lures and lines.

Baitcaster’s are important to Bass fishing because:

      A. Baitcaster’s can be easily spooled with heavier & larger diameter lines- Why is this important? Larger diameter lines (in the 14lb to 17lb size) help heavy lures sink slower due to “diameter drag”. This is VERY important when fishing with Spinnerbaits, larger Crankbaits & Jigs, Etc.
Mono lines have a “high floating characteristic” that also slows the sink rate of larger Bass lures…..

Heavier lines are stronger, more abrasion resistant, and can generally take a lot of abuse.

      B. Baitcasters tend to be more accurate- After practicing with your baitcaster you will notice a vast improvement in accuracy between your spinning outfit and your baitcasting outfit. Obviously, putting the lure exactly WHERE you want it is very important in fishing…….

      C. Baitcasting rods tend to come in more “Bass specific” actions- Although you CAN use Spinning outfit’s for a majority of B-fishing, by using a baitcasting outfit you can more “refine” your fishing techniques. (Analogy- Why use a car for off-roading when you could use a jeep or a 4 wheel drive?)

Bottomline?? If you plan to take Bass fishing seriously you NEED to be able to use a baitcasting outfit.

what spinning reel should i buy for bass fishing and surf fishing?
maybe even some pier fishing. i can spend some money on a good reel but nothing over the top..maybe $80 tops. would a 6’6″ ugly stick be a good choice? thank you. i want a small enough rod to be sensitive enough for bass but strong enough for some inshore saltwater fishing. thanks.
