What is the difference between spinning reel and bait casting?
I am new to fishing.
I have a spinning reel, but can I use this for general fishing off a pier?
A Little and a lot. In a little; they both hold line, retieve line {hopefully with a fish on the end occasionally} and they both set at the end of a rod. In a lot;, the spinning real is easier to cast then the baitcaster. They are set up different. The baitcaster’s line is put back on the spool of the reel horizontally, the spinning real it is vertical to you. The spinning reel can use lighter lines and smaller lures. The baitcaster uses heavier tackle but can haul in larger fish as it “wenches” on retieve. The baitcaster is usually heavier and not available in as many sizes.
In my opinion if you have this question then a spinning outfit is best for you. I use one most the time and think they are generaly the best. More pros are now using them as they have improved over the years.
I don’t know what your fishing for or your location, but I hope my opinions and information help
What brand of spinning reel is the best for bass fishing in Kentucky?
I live in Kentucky and can catch bass anywhere from 2lbs-10lbs. I like to fish with buzz, spinner baits and plastic worms. I want a nice spinning reel that can hold a significant amount of line with 10lb test. I am not wanting to pay a boatload of money. Shoot me some suggestions! Thanks!
A couple of other posts have suggested a Pfleuger reel, and I agree 100%! The Pfleuger President is by far my best spinning reel, and you would not be disappointed with it.
What saltwater spinning reel holds the most line?
I need a saltwater spinning reel that can hold alot of line. Would be for shark fishing.
Normal spinning reels:
Okuma Coronado CD-90. As the name says, it’s a size 90 reel and it will hold a lot of line.
Daiwa DF100A Giant. It’s a size 100 reel but the spool is smaller than Okuma’s.
Special spinning reels:
Fin-Nor Offshore OFS-95. This reel was designed especially for braid lines. It will hold 600 yards of 100lb test braid line.
Van Staal VS300. It’s not the biggest reel but it was especially designed to do what other spinning reels couldn’t do and it could handle fish other spinning reels couldn’t handle (at the time it was introduced at least). It was built with steel and titanium. I wouldn’t be surprised if the reel is bullet proof.
You’ll probably need a custom rod built for these specialty spinning reels. I don’t think you’ll be able to find a spinning rod that could handle very heavy lines. Daiwa Beefstick got a spinning model that could handle up to 40lb test line. But it is a very heavy in weight. Fin-Nor built a spinning rod that could handle 50lb test lines and it will cost over $200.
By the way, I think a conventional reel will work better. Reels selection will be better. Suitable rods that could handle heavier lines are much easier to find too.
What is the main differences between a spinning reel and a baitcasting reel?
I just returned from a fishing trip and caught 4 bass on my shimano spinning rod/reel. What are the main differences between a spinning reel and a bait-casting reel? Which is better? What are the advantages of each? Thanks
A spinning reel has a fixed spool meaning that the spool remains stationary and the bail wraps the line onto the spool. In a baitcasting reel, the spool rotates to dispense and retreive the line. I was always taught that you use a baitcasting reel for heavier lines and a spinning reel for lighter lines.
Which is better is personal opinion.
Some of the advantages to a spinning reel are:
They are easier for a beginner to learn and use.
There is a far less chance of a birds nest with a spinning reel. Baitcasting reels can run into backlash or overrun, especially in the hands of someone with a bit less experience, because of the way the reels work. You must control the spool while you are casting or you run into problems. There are some new technologies today that help in that regard.
You can throw smaller lures more easily.
The advantages to bait casting reels:
Increased casting distance.
More sensitive drag systems
What is the difference between a baitcaster reel and a spinning reel?
I have a spinning reel, but im looking for a new one. should i get a baitcaster or another spinning? Why? What do you use?
It doesn’t take rocket surgery to figure out the difference between a baitcast reel and a spinning reel. Figure it out yourself.

I use baitcast reels primarily, but switch over to spinning reels when small live baits are required.
