which spinning reel from daiwa for surf is worth buying?
I need to buy some really high end reel to make myself happy.which rod should go with that.I have so many reels n rods but they just cant get broken cos I sort of a maintenance freak, everyday after fishing I will strip n clean the reel.So use to that its like 30minutes the most.which is better, high end but a bit decent/appropriate just more than usual.
I’d switch off to Shimano either baitcaster or spinning for the surf. I have two big spinning reels I bought from bass pro shops, bought the ugly stick 13 & 15ft from cabelas.com Funny how one always seems to have a better price on one part of my combos.
I think a lot of the Penn reels are over-rated and $$$. Never put much into daiwa except for freshwater baitcasting…don’t like their freshwater spinning reels.
Good luck …
Good spinning reel for 9 foot surf rod?
I’m normally a conventional reel type of guy but lately finding myself hurting too much at the end of the day. Arthritis is creeping in me bones. I want to buy a 9 foot surf rod ( spinning, M/Hvy ) but need help with a reel. I’m checking out the Tica reels but heard too many complaints about the bail closing prematurely during a hard cast. I need some help here, which reels are good with huge line capacity. Model #’s would be a plus. I normally wouldn’t ask this but I’m more conventional rather than spinning so I may not be up to par and this is why I ask. Thanks guys. ~Chimp Dancer
~By the way, I’m not looking for the high priced stuff. My daughter’s school is milking away that fun so please, moderately priced but decent.
~I want to thank every one for answering and giving me some insight on the larger spinning reels out on the market.~chimp.
Nice answer Shop! (Thumbs up)
Penn Spin-fishers are good/great reels and hold-up well under extreme conditions. I managed a major tackle store in the early-mid 90′s and (to be honest) I was very proud to sell “certain” Penn equipment.
The problem with the “New” Penn outfits?
About 98′ they began trying to compete with Shimano/Daiwa, (they needed reels that had instant anti-reverse, ETC). They started “farming out” misc parts of their new line of reels to China. Thats when Penn started to go down-hill.
HOWEVER, (in my opinion), if you stay with the “old style” Penn (Metal body Spinfisher) reels you should be alright. (Shop, don’t you think an 850 is a bit much? An 850 is a VERY heavy reel generally used for offshore fish! Using a braided-line and downsizing the reel will greatly affect the WEIGHT of the outfit! In my opinion, try a 650 SSM and some braided line if you go the Penn route…….)
CD, your in Fla aren’t you?
If I were you I’d look at the Daiwa Black Gold series too. Neither the Penn SSM OR the Black Golds have all the newest “bells & whistles”, (instant anti-reverse, 14 ball bearings, ETC) and they’ve changed very little in 40 years; they just last FOREVER.
BG’s are built like tanks and can be easily fixed at your local reel shop. I have one from the late 80′s that still works perfectly and it’s caught tons of fish!
I’d rig up with a BG15 or BG20 (depending upon what type of line you intend to use; Braid or Mono).
Black Golds are $79.99 at Bass Pro Shops. You should go and read the reviews regarding them. A Penn 650 SSM is $119.
The reason I’m partial to the BG’s (over the Penn) is because of “wobble”. A Penn Spinfisher “wobbles” like a top when you retrieve it. Whereas, the BG’s are “smoother” on the retrieve.
Either way- Penn SSM or Daiwa Black Gold would be 2 good inexpensive reel choices that will last a LONG time.
Hope this helps ya bro?
What is the best surf fishing spinning rod/ reel combo under $130?
Sturdy and dependable reel and 10′ + rod.
woah dont spend that much money. i have 6 or 7 surf rods that i use for different applications some for sharks other for smaller fish and some for catfish and not the fist one was no more than 50 dollars. i got my rod and reels from the local walley world. they are sold as a combo. and i have a couple that i got from bass pro. the ones that i have from walmart is shakespear brand and the ones from bass pro are Diawa. all are great rod and reel combos. they all come spooled with 20 lb mono line but i dont like that line for surf or cats so i strip that off and spool up some braided spiderwire. all depending on the size of size of fish you are after depends on the size of line. for surf fishing i would recomend atleat a 50 lb line. for the reason that you dont really know exactly what you will hook up to. i have been after whitting before and caught nothing but sharks and stingrays. glad i had that line on there. i have 40 lb 50 lb and 60 lb line on my reels. there is a little saying that i go buy when it comes to bying fishin gear and pretty much anything that money is spent on
“Quality doesnt always come with a big price tag, and Big price tags dont always mean quality”
you dont have to spend a pile of money for quality. just remember that even though the reels are made for saltwater, it is always good to take your reel to the water hose and spray it down for a few seconds and then take a can of wd40 and spray it down. the wd 40 helps get out any salt left. i hope this helps you out a bit good luck good fishin be safe and remember to share the experience
what is the difference between surf spinning and surf casting rods? and what type of reel is used with each?
what are bait-casting reels used with? are they used with the surf spinning or with the surf casting rods?
You can surf fish with any type of tackle — spinning, conventional, baitcasting, or even fly tackle. But in general, surf fishermen like very long rods (9-12 feet long) to help with making longer casts, and larger, high-capacity reels. There are surf rods made for both spinning and conventional reels. I think “surf casting” is just another term for surf fishing, though I can imagine it might be used to differentiate a rod made for use with a conventional reel from one made for a spinning reel.
Spinning rods are made with a large first guide, and designed to be used with the guides underneath. Rods for revolving-spool reels (baitcasting and conventional) are made with more and smaller guides, and are designed to be used with the guides on top. You can put a revolving spool reel on a spinning rod and it’ll work okay, but the small guides on a conventional rod will cut the distance you can cast if you put a spinning reel on it. The trigger grip on baitcasting rods make it very uncomfortable (to say the least) to use a spinning reel on it.
what spinning reel should i buy for bass fishing and surf fishing?
maybe even some pier fishing. i can spend some money on a good reel but nothing over the top..maybe $80 tops. would a 6’6″ ugly stick be a good choice? thank you. i want a small enough rod to be sensitive enough for bass but strong enough for some inshore saltwater fishing. thanks.
