What is the best rod and reel brands to buy for fresh water fishing?
I have not been fishing in about 10 years and want to get back into it. It has been so long and tomorrow I am going to the swap meet and they have lot of selections to buy there. What is a quality rod and reel brand name I can look out for while I am there?

Need a good online company for getting good prices on fishing equipment. Rods, reels, ect.?
I am looking for sporting goods company’s that have the best deals on fishing and hunting equipment. Prefer some that have large selection and price range from inexpensive to prices that would really tick off the old lady. Like the song go’s, if I go fishing again she will leave me, and I am going to miss her!!

You need to say what kind of fishing you intend doing because rods particularly vary enormously. Some are flexible, some are stiff. Some have their flexibility at the tip, others carry it all the way through. Do you intend fishing with a float, a leger/feeder or a lure? What kind/size of fish are you after?

My best advice is to go into a fishing shop and talk to them. In my experience they will sort you out with the best gear for the job at the price. It is very unusual indeed for fishing shops to rip you off. People who work in them love the sport and love to help others learn it too. They also have a reputation to maintain. Word of bum deals soon gets around. Good UK brands at sensible prices include Shakespeare, Ron Thompson and Leeda. For sensibly priced reels I recommend Okuma and Shimano. Some of their stuff is expensive but they also do very good entry level tackle.

Welcome to angling! One final bit of advice for you. It is really cold at the moment (no prizes for that observation)! If you want to have a good time at this time of year avoid getting cold. Wear lots and lots of layers of clothes when you go out, and make sure you have very warm footwear. Once you get cold I always think the day is ruined, because you can never get warm again.

Don’t know it this helps, but I have dealt with a company called Hook and Hackle with good results. They stock almost anything you need for fly fishing at a reasonable price and are very customer service friendly.
